License Plates for Education

The Indiana State Legislature authorized an education license plate beginning January 1, 1997, the proceeds of which go to local school corporations or foundations. Persons purchasing plates designate the school corporation which will receive $18.75 of the $25 paid for the special plate. The remainder of the $25 contribution goes to the Indiana Department of Education to support elementary counseling programs. All special plates cost $40 with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles receiving $15 for an administrative fee.

Through a statewide effort initiated by public education foundations, brochures and posters were made available to all school corporations in October 1998 with support from Farm Bureau Insurance and assistance by the Department of Education.

From 1997-2004, Indiana residents contributed $4,651,593 directly to schools and $1,550,531 to the Department of Education in support of elementary counseling. This makes a total of $6,202,125 donated in direct support of public education in Indiana.

In addition, a proudly displayed plate demonstrates pride in our local schools and support for public education in communities across the state. The ultimate beneficiaries of this increased interest in and support for public education are the thousands of children in the classrooms of our public schools.

You will find many ways to promote the license plates in your community to support your schools. A Garfield Education License Plate flyer may be downloaded from the following web site: http://www.doe.state.in.us/garfield.

"Coming from an inner city middle school with a poverty rate hovering at close to 90%, one might think things look extremely bleak here. However, the Vigo County Education Foundation has been and continues to be the 'Great Equalizer' in making all things possible for our teachers and students. Because of the Foundation, we can provide opportunities otherwise deemed financially impossible. It is a lifeline for us!"
